In 1475, the Earl of Atholl captured the rebel Iain MacDonald by filling the well he drew water from with honey, oatmeal and whisky. The mixture was so enticing the MacDonald, rather than fleeing his pursuers, stayed to enjoy the concoction, giving the Earl time to capture him. To this day the recipe he found so beguiling remains a secret, but it is known as Atholl Brose. |
