Ardbeg Traigh Bhan 19 Years Old Batch No. 2
LS0-57768*
Matured in American oak and Oloroso sherry casks, this sublime 19 year old whisky is the epitome of an aged Ardbeg. Part of a highly sought-after and collectable Ardbeg series, 19 Years Old Batch 2 is a new permanent expression, released only in limited batches each year.
With a subtle change to the batch recipe, this is a transformational dram. That being said, the impossible balance of Batch 1 is still ever-present in Batch 2’s taste profile, as well as the palatable parallels with the place that inspired it – Islay’s Singing Sands. The first batch of Traigh Bhan went down a storm, probably because it was bottled in one! Batch 2 however was bottled during a haar (the Scots Gaelic word for a ‘thick coastal mist/fog’), making it an opportunity not to be mist…

Ardbeg
Ardbeg is the last of the three distilleries near Port Ellen and may be the most picturesque distillery of the three. A distillery was founded in Ardbeg in 1794 by Alexander Stewart but Ardbeg Distillery was not licensed until 1815 by the MacDougalls. The distillery was closed for many years yet is now a true flourishing brand in the Scotch Whisky industry. All the distilleries have their names painted on the side of their warehouses and this was to help the ships and sailors to know which distillery to collect whisky from or drop off supplies too. Ardbeg was known to be the toughest of the lot and claimed many ships over the years. The bay that is in front of Ardbeg Distillery has nine known shipwreck sites and it is believed that there could be many more in the bay. Ardbeg is owned by The Glenmorangie Co which is owned by Moët Hennessy. The distillery has one wash still and one spirit still. They produce 1,150,000 litres a year. House Style: Earthy, very peaty, smoky, salty, and robust. A bedtime malt.

Nose : On the nose, faint ripples of sweet wood smoke and tart crème fraîche flowgently into bold notes of savoury fennel, celeriac and roasted tea leaves.Plunge further and discover alluring aromas of charcoal and lightly burnttoast. A splash of water releases a gust of fresh sea spray, followed by eucalyptusoil and pine. Finally, this irresistible nose ends with an unmistakable top noteof saddle soap and leather.
Palate : An intensely salty mouthfeel shifts like the tides into soothing medicinalnotes, followed by salted peanut brittle, smoked pineapple and lime juice.Waves of aniseed lap over the palate, before rich fudge, birch tar and peatsmoke crash down wildly. This is a dram that coaxes you in, and all assumptions are best left behind.Simply let this alluring spirit surprise and delight.
Finish : Savoury and smoky notes collide in a sharp, intense, yet satisfyingly longfinish.
