Glendronach
The Glendronach distillery was founded in 1826 and is one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries. The distillery is found in the very small village of Forgue near Huntly. About a decade after Glendronach opened it was destroyed by a fire. The distillery was open until 1996 when it was mothballed by Allied Distillers. Glendronach then re-opened to full production in May, 2002. The distillery was one of the last distilleries to use direct coal fire for their stills. They stopped using coal and changed to steam in 2005. Glendronach is renowned for its rich sherried whiskies. This comes from the high quality Pedro Ximenez sherry butts they use. The butts are hand selected from Spain to ensure the high standards of Glendronach. House Style: Smooth, big, with a teasing sweet-and-dry maltiness. Sherry-friendly. After dinner.

Nose: All the features of ‘full sherry’: raisins, walnuts, espresso, balsamic and even a trace of smoke.
Palate: It’s quite mouthcoating with again the sherry traits as absolute ruler: raisins, figs, prunes, dark chocolate and cloves. Quite a bit of cinnamon and Italian coffee. Of the sulphur, thank the Maker, no trace.
Finish: Nice and long and pretty spicy.
