Abstract is a blend of Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino Grenache, Petite Sirah, and Syrah primarily from hillside vineyards.
There is this inexplicable feeling when you arrive early in the morning at one of Dave Phinney’s hand picked vineyards , be it in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada or on the soon-to-be busy Napa Valley floor. No matter where, the combination of the viscous fog, natural silence and utter sensorial beauty is downright therapeutic. In 2015, with yet another year of California drought, the yields were low—much lower than expected—yet, quality was there with small clusters, small berries and high amounts of flavor concentration. After fermentation and a couple months in barrel, 150 different wine lots were tasted through—Dave searching for the right components for his ‘Abstract’ art piece. Individually, they were good wines, just incomplete. But together, they presented a story—about a place, a person, a culture. If you sit, drink and ponder the label, you too will be able to discern a place, a person, and a culture. Enjoy.
